Coming Out with MBLGTACC!
Friday, October 13
6:00 - 8:00 pm
Come celebrate the Omaha LGBTQ+ community with an hour-long panel of advisers and students on the planning committee for the Midwest, Bisexual, Lesbian, Gay, Transgender, and Ally College Conference (MBLGTACC) of 2018 talking about their wide-ranging experiences of coming out. Please grab a cup of coffee and hangout with the committee during the social hour after! Bonus points if you bring a fun mug of your own to show off.

MBLGTACC holds the title of the largest student-led LGBTQ+ conference in the nation with an average attendance of around 2,000 people. This conference, MBLGTACC, will be held at the University of Nebraska at Omaha campus on February 16–18 of 2018. With a personal goal of bringing 2,500 undergraduate students to our campus, our committee is profoundly dedicated to constituting and organizing a memorable experience for all attendees and benefactors. October is LGBT History Month. On National Coming Out Day (October 11), we celebrate coming out as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (LGBTQ+) or as an ally. Join us to celebrate the 29th anniversary of National Coming Out Day and bless those who are doing the important work of making our communities safer for all people to be wholly themselves.

Open Mic Night for High School and College Students with MBLGTACC!

The Midwest, Bisexual, Lesbian, Gay, Transgender, and Ally College Conference (MBLGTACC) of 2018 is excited to co-host an open mic night with Urban Abbey centered around one of five of the conference pillars, resistance: “We encourage challenging the institution, in whatever form or direction it may take, endlessly and fiercely using our community resources and personal strengths. Giving up is not an option.” Show us what inspires you to resist injustice and oppression creatively with optional feminist and LGBTQ+ coloring pages during the event!

Join us for Grow! Night. We will start with dinner in community and then partake in various opportunities for spiritual growth. Dinner will be served from 5:30-6:30. Classes begin at 6:00 and end at 8:30. Classes offered include UA 101, UA 201, or a Bible Study on a special topic. Wesley Pub: "Encountering Death: True Stories from a Chaplain" with Joel Walker

Join the Urban Abbey and Joel Walker, Hospice Chaplain for the Visiting Nurses Association, as Joel discusses lessons learned and questions raised from his years being present with people from all walks of life in their final moments.

Wesley Pub is for everyone, Christians, non-Christians and people annoyed by by Christians. It is for everyone that might have given up on church or wouldn’t step foot in a church. Affiliated with the Urban Abbey UMC, but not exclusively Christian, join us for Church without a steeple; a community centered on exploring progressive theology and social justice topics through dialogue, reflection, art and music. Bring some beer or a bottle of wine to share. Everyone is welcome, but you must be 21 to partake responsibly.

Join us for a showing of the first film about Gaza made by Palestinians living the reality of Israel's siege and blockade of this tiny enclave. It is the story of two young women, survivors of Israel's Operation Cast Lead. Mona Samouni and the filmmaker, Fida Qishta. They represent the spirit and future of Palestinians It reveals the strengthand hope, the humanity and humor that flourish among the people of Gaza. Few films document so powerfully and personally the impact of modern warfare and sanctions on a civilian population.

Veterans Day Book-Signing and Event: “The Soldier’s Story: The Invisible Wounds from War”

Join the Urban Abbey for this Veterans Day event featuring author and former Staff Sergeant Jocephus Duckworth and a multi-organization panel of experts, military members, veterans, and their families discussing PTSD and its impact on veterans in the Omaha community.

6:00 - 7:00 pm: Former Staff Sergeant Jocephus Duckworth will read excerpts from and discuss his book, The Soldier's Story: The Invisible Wounds from War, about his experiences returning from war and dealing with PTSD. Copies of his book will be available for purchase and signing.

7:00 - 8:00 pm: Panel discussion about PTSD and its impact on military veterans, their families, and the Omaha community.
